for Two Like Saxophones
Duration: '19
Premiered by Matthew Howell and Johnny Salinas
Plurality presents an array of musical genres in a spectrum from one extreme to another.
The work strives to question the nature of art music by presenting a spectrum of various musical styles, but in a somewhat linear progression to also explore the relationships between genres. Each movement will have a connection to the two immediately before and after, and throughout the course of the work these similarities will slowly swap out until the music is completely different. The first and last movement are intended to be somewhat inaccessible to a general audience, drawing on the extremes of the saxophone’s extended technique capabilities. The intention of the work is to present the music from the extremes of art music to the extremes of popular/commercial music to show the similarities between the extremities of both and all the genres in between.
