for Soprano/Alto and Tenor/Baritone Saxophones
Duration: '7
Commissioned and premiered by the Collider Duo
Impromptu for saxophones is exactly what the title suggests: an improvisatory work for two saxophones with a somewhat last-minute inception. Looking to fill space on a program, my two friends and colleagues Matthew Floeter and Abraham Nunez asked me if I’d like to compose a work for their duo to premiere at the 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA)conference. The only catch was that they needed a title that same day to submit with their application, thus the Impromptu was born.
The piece is divided into four movements that each take on a distinct character described by the tempo markings at the beginning of each section. They are all dedicated to the ways Matt and Abraham work with one another, and their interpretations of music and subsequent rehearsal habits. I have chosen not to title the individual movements to leave some interpretation to the performers’ discretion, and to allow performers to have a more personal interpretation of the music.
This work is dedicated to my good friends Matthew Floeter and Abraham Nunez, and premiered by their Collider Duo on March 7th, 2020 at the 2020 Biennial NASA conference.
