for Alto Saxophone and Electronics
Duration: '10
Premiered by Matthew Howell
(re/de)lay is a duet between alto saxophone and the live electronic processing. The electronics serve as a tape delay, repeating everything the saxophonist plays exactly one 8th note later at 116 bpm. The title for the piece is literal in that it's representing the absolute nature of the work, as the tape delay relays the electronic sounds, thus the notation as (re/de)lay, as relay and delay are both true. The piece is written in an explicitly improvisatory way, with most of the piece consisting of groups of cells with timestamps to show when to play them. Each timestamp introduces a new set of cells to either add to the current group of cells, replace them with a similar idea, or segue into something completely different. While the performer is given timestamps and instructed to perform with a timer, there is still a lot of room for improvisation, and the performer is encouraged to take liberties wherever they can.
